By buying direct through Storimarket you are ensuring The Epicurious Hedgehog and their farmers are getting a fair deal, which allows them to continue to produce amazing food products in a way that is good for the environment, good for communities and good for business.
Roza Daudi has been farming cacao in Busoka village, southwest Tanzania since 2001. As a 43-year old widow, it is up to her to support her family. Her three acre farm gives her up to 1,500kg of cacao every year, which she sells to the Epicurious Hedgehog.
The Epicurious Hedgehog are able to pay a premium price for her cacao crop, as it is used to make cacao nibs - a value-added product, which consumers buy. Unfortunately, this is not the norm for other buyers, who usually buy it to trade and export as a commodity.
As Epicurious Hedgehog grows, they are able to buy more from Roza, which will improve her income. She uses her cacao income to meet her family’s daily basic needs, pay her children’s school fees, buy livestock, cover health service cost, and to provide capital for her rice and maize farming activities.
Farmers registered with Epicurious Hedgehog receive training in good agricultural practices (following an agroforestry approach and organic principles) so they can harvest a good quality, natural crop. This also protects the environment for future generations.
