For Rose, being a grandmother doesn’t mean retirement and spending time with the grandkids. She is still hard at work, running her farm, where she grows cacao for the Chocolate-covered Raw Cacao Beans.
Rose has been a contract farmer with Asante Mama since 2013. Working with Asante Mama means she receives free seedlings, training and support, and crucially Asante Mama promise to buy her cacao back from her once it is grown. By producing their own Cacao products and cutting out the middlemen, Asante Mama can pay Rose more for her cacao.
This provides her with the income she needs to pay her children and grandchildren’s school fees and build her family a better home. Last year, Rose told us she expected her house to be finished this year. However, a costly land dispute means it might now take a bit longer for her to finish. Rose is not deterred. She takes this in her stride.
The farm is almost fully devoted to growing cacao. After the pods are harvested and cracked open, the beans are laid in banana lined boxes for seven days for their first fermentation.
