Working as a husband and wife team, Valerie and Alula decided to harness the nutritional value of teff (which is full of fibre, calcium manganese, phosphorus, iron, copper, aluminum, barium, thiamin, and vitamin C) to create a unique snack. Dirkosh Crunch, a modern spin on this ancient grain that originated in Ethiopia as far back as 4000 BC, is a vegan, gluten-free, & oil-free teff crisp that is sure to satisfy your cravings. The Garlic Rich, Fiery Mitmita, Toasty Sesame, & Afar Salt flavors are bold and adventurous: just like you! 

The idea for Dirkosh Crunch began when Valerie turned vegan and couldn’t find any crisps that were actually healthy - and tasty! Living in Ethiopia provided a unique opportunity to take a local staple (injera) and create an innovative recipe that transformed it into an irresistible crunchy snack. Being a social worker, who had backpacked across the continent before settling in Addis Ababa, she began envisioning a way to help the community while inspiring the world to see Africa’s beauty.

While other gluten-free healthy alternatives exist, Dirkosh Crunch is the only gluten-free, & oil-free crisp that also provides a unique exploration into Ethiopia’s vibrant cuisine.  Not only is this snack protein & micronutrient rich, it also partners with a community of local farmers and underserved women.

This is articulated in Dirkosh's mission:

  1. Create simple and healthy teff inspired snacks for on-the-go, adventurous, vegan and gluten-free consumers.
  2. Provide a community that empowers undervalued local women & farmers in Ethiopia.
  3. Generate a deeper understanding and appreciation for Ethiopia and its vibrant people and culture.
