Meeting the people behind our ethical food products is one of the best parts of our job. We meet people who are an inspiration. People who despite a lifetime of hardship, keep on going and striving to do the best they can for themselves, their families and their communities. We know we've found a great ethical food producer when we meet the farmers behind their ethical food products and hear stories of how fair trade practices have changed their lives from one of great hardship, to one of great hope.
Earlier this year we travelled to rural Uganda to meet Asante Mama farmer Rose. For Rose, being a grandmother doesn’t mean retirement and spending time with the grandkids. She is still hard at work, running her farm, where she grows organic cacao for the Asante Mama organic cacao beans that Storimarket sells. Rose has been a contract farmer with ethical food producer Asante Mama since 2013, which means she receives free seedlings, training and support and crucially Asante Mama promise to buy her organic cacao back from her once it is grown.
By producing their own organic cacao products and cutting out the middlemen, Asante Mama can pay Rose more for her cacao. This provides her with the income she needs to pay her children and grandchildren’s school fees and build her family a better home.
Rose has been building her house for seven years now, and she hopes to have it finished in one year’s time. We can’t wait to go back and visit her to find out how she likes her new home.
